Celebration in the United States has had a significant impact on how the holiday is observed in other nations.
The history of Halloween traditions in a given country also lends context to how it is presently celebrated. Celtic Christians may have Samhain services that focus on the cultural aspects of the holiday, in the belief that many ancient Celtic customs are “incompatible with the new Christian religion. Christianity embraced the Celtic notions of family, community, the bond among all people, and respect for the dead. Throughout the centuries, Pagan and Christian beliefs intertwine in a gallimaufry hodgepodge of celebrations from October 31st through November 5th, all of which appear both to challenge the ascendancy of the dark and to revel in its mystery.
Halloween celebrations are common among Roman Catholic parochial schools throughout North America and in Ireland. Father Gabriele Amorth, a Vatican-appointed exorcist in Rome, has said, “If English and American children like to dress up as witches and devils on one night of the year that is not a problem. If it is just a game, there is no harm in that.
Other Christians, primarily of the Evangelical and Fundamentalist variety, are concerned about Halloween, and reject the holiday because they believe it trivializes and celebrates “the occult” and what they perceive as evil. A response among some fundamentalists in recent years has been the use of Hell houses or themed pamphlets such as those of Jack T. Chick which attempt to make use of Halloween as an opportunity for evangelism. Some consider Halloween to be completely incompatible with the Christian faith due to its origin as a Pagan “Festival of the Dead.

October 29, Auto Parts Workers Rally Across Ontario CAW members in more than auto parts workplaces took part in a series of lunchtime demonstrations outside their plants during a province-wide day of action on October The protest was the culmination of months of planning and involved 15, workers across Ontario. Parts workers called for a stop to the downward pressure on working conditions, employer demands for severe contract give-backs and demanded greater respect for work ownership, including the right to follow work in the event it is relocated to other facilities — with the collective agreement in tact.
CAW President Ken Lewenza told a crowd of demonstrators in the parking lot of Burlington Technologies that cutting the wages and benefits of workers will not solve the uncertainty facing the parts industry. Lewenza highlighted that demands on parts workers for concessions are not limited to unionized shops, as non-unionized workers often face much more severe cutbacks. In Canada, approximately 20, parts workers are union members while about 40, to 45, are not. Lewenza urged government to introduce fairer unionization legislation, which would see card check certification reinstated in the province.
He also lambasted the government for allowing employers to use replacement workers during labour disputes and touched on the need to introduce fair severance and bankruptcy legislation. This large-scale effort organized under the campaign Auto Parts Workers United, also included a massive outreach effort to non-unionized parts workers, including those employed by Magna. For more information on the campaign or the Day of Action, please visit: In the statement, passed on October 15, the union expresses its grave concern about the bullying of LGBT teens and urges renewed vigilance against all forms of bullying, including jokes, slurs, harassment, threats and any form of violent behaviour.

A visit to a Scottish woollen mill If you drive around the Highlands, the winding single-track roads of childhood memory have sadly been replaced across much of the countryside by wide straight 60mph concrete highways blasted thoughtlessly through the landscape. The good news is that you can still see unspoilt Highland countryside from Scotland’s railways, and the train takes you through some of the best scenery in Scotland or indeed, in Britain.
